About the Island

Off the north coast of mainland Scotland, Sandy has an area of nineteen square miles, and a population of about 500. Sanday’s large expanse of white, unspoilt beaches and its wide variety of wildlife, from rare birds to seals and otters, offer the discerning traveler a wonderful opportunity to relax and encounter island life.

Exploring the coastline, you will see cormorants, fulmars, shags and ravens. If you look carefully, you will notice colonies of grey and common seals, and occasionally killer and minke whales. In the summer season, the meadows abound with lady’s bed-straw, northern marsh orchids, buttercups, and grass of Parnassus.
