How to find us

There are several connections involved, but the journey is part of the adventure, and will be well worth the trip.

From the Scottish Mainland, you can catch a ferry from Scrabster, north Scotland, to Orkney Mainland, then another ferry to Sanday.

By air, you may fly from Inverness or Glasgow to Orkney Mainland, then by small plane to Sanday.

Vehicle ferries

From north Scotland to Orkney Mainland:
Visit Northlink Orkney Ferries here or telephone: 0845 6000 449. Vehicles should be booked in advance

  • Ferry from Scrabster (near Thurso, north Scotland, 112 miles north of Inverness) to Stromness (Orkney Mainland) (1hr 30 mins)
  • Or ferry from Aberdeen (east Scotland) to Kirkwall (Orkney Mainland) (6 hours).

The linking ferry on Orkney Mainland is from Kirkwall.

From Kirkwall to Sanday:

From other routes

Visit Pentland Ferries here or telephone 01856 831 226, operate a vehicle ferry from Gill's Bay near John o'Groats to St. Margaret's Hope on Orkney. Sailing time: only 1 hour. Three or more sailings every day during the summer. Booking advisable.

Visit The Smyril Line here. This service operates passenger and vehicle ferries between the Faroe Islands, Denmark, Norway, Iceland, and the Shetland Isles.

Passenger ferry

Visit John O'Groats Ferries here A privately-run ferry operates daily during the summer from John O'Groats to Burwick on the southern tip of Orkney. No vehicles taken, but cycles allowed. Buses to Kirkwall connect with the ferry.

Air

British Airways flies to Kirkwall Airport from Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Inverness, Wick, and Sumburgh (Shetland).

From Kirkwall, Logan Air, a BA subsidiary company, will fly to you Sanday.
Depending on the length of your journey, or the timing of your connections, you may find that you require an overnight stop in Orkney, which is well worth a visit.
